WayForward formally announced the project on Twitter after the stream, however refused to comment on what exactly the upcoming project is, only denying that it would be a DLC expansion of the original game. Replying to a fan, the developer’s Twitter stated “It is a separate project, not DLC.” Interestingly, in a run down of all of the titles featured in Limited Run Games’s presentation, a game titled “River City Girls 0” is mentioned, leaving many to speculate if the upcoming project would be a prequel to the original game instead of a sequel.

River City Girls received an update earlier this year which added a secret ending, which changed the ending of the original game after many fans criticized it for coming off as mean-spirited. While this ending still leaves enough room for a sequel, a prequel would be an interesting direction to take given that there is a lot of room to expand the story of River City Girls and flesh out Kyoko and Misako as characters. WayForward stated on Twitter “We don’t have any more details to share at this time, but stay tuned for updates in the future!”

River City Girls is out now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
