Cheadle first made his MCU debut in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2, replacing Terrence Howard who portrayed the character in Iron Man. Cheadle would go on to reprise the role in six more MCU feature films and is now gearing up to star in his own series for Disney Plus.

According to The Phils’ recent Instagram post, a new behind-the-scenes Secret Invasion photo reveals filming has been continuing near Liverpool Street Station in London, U.K. The set appears to resemble the aftermath of some big apocalyptic event. What else stands out in the photo, other than Rogers: The Musical from Hawkeye will be featured, are prop newspapers scattered in the streets that show Cheadle’s James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes on the front page greeting the MCU’s new President of the United States.
Cheadle has already had a cameo appearance in last year’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which surprisingly earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series. While he gave Sam Wilson/Falcon some important advice in that series, his role was very brief. But in Secret Invasion, Rhodes could play a more crucial part, as the series will involve plenty of story elements involving politics and defense. On top of that, the series could provide a much-needed update as to where Rhodes is in his life ahead of his return in Armor Wars, a series that will center on Rhodes dealing with Stark tech falling into the wrong hands.
While it will be exciting to see Rhodes’ return, Secret Invasion’s story alone will be one unlike anything that has come before. The series will follow Nick Fury as he reunites with the friendly intergalactic Skrull Talos to help take down other rogue Skrulls who have infiltrated Earth and have taken great positions of power. From the other Secret Invastion set photos that have revealed Fury’s new rugged look, it is still unclear when the series will fit into the MCU timeline.
Created by Mr. Robot’s Kyle Bradstreet, the series also stars Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as the main villain. Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Killian Scott, and Christopher McDonald have been cast in undisclosed roles. The series will likely tie into other projects like Ms. Marvel or The Marvels, both which are set to release in late 2022 and early 2023, respectively.
Secret Invasion is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in late 2022.
