The most recent mainline game in the long-running series, Skyrim has been re-released in various forms multiple times. From special editions on different platforms, to Skyrim: Anniversary Edition’s surprise release on the Nintendo Switch, the beloved RPG has gotten so many special editions and re-releases that it has become a meme among the Elder Scrolls fanbase. New editions coming to more modern consoles means that new players are picking up the game and experiencing the wonders of exploring the world of Skyrim for the first time.

Player ChrissTJ showed off their mishap in a video posted to the Skyrim subreddit. The video begins with them looting a draugr and overburdening themselves. They shuffle through their inventory to drop an axe, then continue onward with their journey. That journey comes to an abrupt halt as ChrissTJ steps on a disguised pressure plate, triggering a swinging spike trap. The trap slams into ChrissTJ, instantly killing them and sending them bouncing around the dungeon. The game is famous for its physics, which can lead to cool bottle flip tricks in Skyrim, but which more often lead to enemies and players having very funny death scenes.
This clip really shows the heart of the Skyrim experience: a new player with no prior knowledge of the game’s ins and outs exploring the game’s first major dungeon and meeting an unfortunate death. Skyrim’s death and respawn system is fairly forgiving as well, so players don’t lose much by dying, and they can gain some valuable game experience. Like, for example, what happens when a low-level player decides to fight one of Skyrim’s giants.
Despite being eleven years old, players continue to find and enjoy new experiences in Skyrim. Bethesda has definitely helped in this regard by releasing updated versions of the game with new and improved features, but the dedicated player community does a lot of work in that regard as well. The Skyrim modding community is huge, and continues to extend the game’s replayability with some super in-depth mods. Two innovative modders recently released a Skyrim mod that overhauls the game’s farming system, adding a whole new level of realism to the RPG. With such a dedicated fanbase, it seems certain that new players will continue to get killed by spike traps and giants for years to come.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
