The prospect of a new Sonic the Hedgehog series was first hinted at by Netflix in December 2020. One of the streamer’s Twitter accounts posted a photo along with the announcement of a new Sonic the Hedgehog 3D animated series, but the image was subsequently pulled, leaving fans to wonder if such a project was truly in the works.

Roughly two months later, Netflix confirmed a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series was indeed coming to the streamer, with Sega, Netflix Animation, WildBrain and Man of Action Entertainment co-producing. Now, over a year after the official announcement, Netflix and Sega have released an official teaser trailer for Sonic Prime, and it promises the Blue Speedster will “shatter your world.” While a precise release date was not announced with the teaser trailer, Netflix did provide a winter 2022 release window, which means Sonic Prime will likely arrive on the streamer in December or possibly November.
At just 40-seconds long, the Sonic Prime teaser trailer doesn’t offer much story information, but it does feature familiar locations and characters that will certainly excite fans of the video game franchise. As Sonic runs through the Green Hill Zone, he crosses paths with Shadow the Hedgehog, resulting in a race between the rivals that culminates in a showdown. Of course, Sonic’s arch-nemesis Dr. Eggman appears, prompting the speedster to declare, “You make it, I break it, Eggman.” This enrages Eggman, who proceeds to fight Sonic in a giant robot suit.
Sonic Prime isn’t the first series about the Sega character to hit television, but past shows about the speedster have yielded mixed results. While Sonic Prime is clearly targeted toward a young audience, it appears to capture the magic that made the original video games so popular to begin with.
One key component that won’t be featured in Sonic Prime is Tails voice actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who voiced the character in several related projects, including the two live-action films starring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic. Nonetheless, the teaser trailer suggests Sonic Prime will have more than enough characters from the franchise to deliver a fun experience, regardless of who may be voicing them.
Sonic Prime will be released on Netflix in winter 2022.
