What can be said about the new trailer? Heck, it’s a new Galaxy 2 trailer, what more do you need to know? There’s Mario, there’s Yoshi, there’s a new power-up revealed…

Wait, what?

Yes, that’s right! As you can see below, the new trailer shows off Rock Mario (as Game Rant shall henceforth refer to him), who looks oddly reminiscent of Goron Link from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. As the trailer shows, upon finding an oddly rock-coloured Mushroom (how on Earth can he eat that thing?), Mario transforms into Rock Mario, and can roll into a ball and, well, crash into the environment. Silly fun, but hey - it’s Mario, what more do you want?  Have a look at the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer:

Interestingly, as we’ve noted before here at Game Rant, there is a distinct absence of the Wii pointer during the traditional running-and-jumping segments of the game. Does this mean that Galaxy 2 will not employ the same method of collecting the star bits as the original? The only times that a pointer appeared on screen were during the Yoshi segments, as well as the new ’level-select’ screens.

Personally, I’m a little stupefied as to why Nintendo decided to cut out The Observatory in favor of the new, simplified system they seem to be going with. I can understand the idea of appealing to people who find it difficult to find their way around the hub world, but hey, that’s their problem. I want more library storytelling sessions!

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released on May 23rd, exclusively on the Nintendo Wii.
