The New Tales from the Borderlands reveal trailer introduces players to the main cast of the new game, though it does not provide their official names. The short video sets up New Tales from the Borderlands’ story as revolving around an invasion by weapons manufacturer Tediore with rumors of a Vault on a space station spurring the cast into action. Previous leaks have suggested the characters’ names are Anu, Fran, and Octavio with Fran’s nametag, visible in the trailer, seemingly confirming these leaks.
New Tales from the Borderlands’ first trailer intersperses much of the game’s more serious themes with the Borderlands franchise’s signature brand of humor. Remarks about “talking guns” and “guns with legs” are followed by a comical talking gun with legs bantering with other soldiers. The trailer’s opening segments are also narrated by Borderlands franchise staple Marcus, referring to the main cast as “a trio of losers trying to get through a bad day.” The reveal trailer also with the announcement of the game’s release platforms, coming to both current and next-gen consoles.
New Tales from the Borderlands comes as the Borderlands fandom is waiting for news on the future of the main series. While New Tales from the Borderlands joins Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands as spinoff games releasing this year, no official announcements have been made by Gearbox yet about a fourth main Borderlands game. The franchise has not seen a new main-series game since 2019’s Borderlands 3, with its DLC support ending in September 2020. While Borderlands 4 may still be a ways off, New Tales from the Borderlands looks to be an exciting romp for fans of the franchise’s story.
New Tales from the Borderlands will release on October 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
