Matt Reeves has continued to insist that his Batman film will be different from the rest and trailers released so far seem to corroborate this claim. The Batman has been marketed as a darker, grittier version of the superhero than previous iterations which, up to this point, have focused on Batman’s heroic side. Reeves’ version of the Riddler has also sparked interest, as the director has drawn comparisons between his villain and real-life serial killers.

While images of The Batman’s the Riddler in costume are not rare and were included in the film’s first trailer last year, he is rarely seen out of the Zodiac-inspired plastic getup. Until now, fans have only been given a carefully edited scene of the Riddler at a diner that focuses on the back of his head and never reveals his face. An unedited version of the scene has been released through Good Morning America, wherein Gotham police point guns at the villain, yelling at him to turn around, and this time the scene remains on the face of the Riddler, complete with a satisfied smirk.

Dano does not speak in the newly revealed clip, but the smile he gives the police says a lot about his character. In typical Riddler fashion, it gives the impression that he knows something they don’t, and he is a step ahead of them. This is in keeping with the theme that The Batman will be distinctly different from other versions before it.

Dano’s portrayal of the villain is the polar opposite of Jim Carrey’s, who famously wore skin-tight outfits and danced around while hurling bad jokes at his enemy. In this short clip, Dano’s Riddler is shown to be subdued, intelligent, and, most certainly, ahead of the game. The collision of Pattinson’s Batman and Dano’s Riddler should be an interesting and unique battle to watch.

The Batman will be released on March 4, 2022.
